The Good News - the message of Christianity

It’s quite difficult to avoid life really, what with us all living it and all.

“Life. Don't talk to me about life!”
- Marvin the Paranoid Android

"Life's too short to be afraid, So take a pill to numb the pain, You don't have to take the blame."
- Robbie Williams, from the song 'Strong'

"Life is full of misery, loneliness, and suffering - and it's all over much too soon."
Woody Allen

But how much have you ever really thought about life?

Is there more to life than getting through the day? Is it just about doing the education thing to get a job to get money to buy stuff and then you die. Is that really all there is to life?

We’re not here to impose some moral code on you, or to give to a list of do’s and don’ts. That’s definitely not what Christianity’s about.

It's about Jesus Christ

THE REALITY:

God exists. He made the world. That means he's in charge of it.

He loves you.

He loves you now, as you are. Not when you become a better person. Not when you get religious. Even though you don't want anything to do with him.

He wants you to know him.

THE PROBLEM:

You didn't want anything to do with him. None of us did. Maybe you still don't.

Our rejection of God has serious consequences. This is why the world's in such a mess. This is why there's all that pain and suffering and misery. This is why you're not as good as you'd like to be, deep down, and however hard you try you know you can't be perfect.

But worst of all, it means that you don't know God, and there's a hefty barrier between you. That's called sin. It's your rebellion against the one who made you, and it's all the rubbish stuff you've done as a result of that. And unless something is done about that barrier, you'll be separated from God forever: separated from anything that's good, anything you enjoy, any kind of love. That's called hell.

God doesn't want that for you! Remember, he loves you! But he can't just ignore the barrier. That would mean ignoring all the pain, and the suffering, and the misery. It would mean ignoring the treachery, the high treason, the huge slap in the face you gave to God when you ignored him. There would be no justice.

But that's not how God left it.

THE SOLUTION:

God can't ignore the barrier. And you can't remove it. But he can remove it. How?

Jesus took responsibility for your barrier, for your sin. He died because of it – the only way that justice can be done.

But hang on, how can his death deal with my sin?

Jesus was a perfect human. He didn't have his own barrier of sin, so he was in a position to deal with yours.

Jesus is God. God didn't leave you to sort out your own mess, and he didn't pick on someone to do it for you, he did it himself - all that needed to be done.

THE CHOICE:

But hang on, I didn't ask Jesus to take responsibility for my mess.

No, you're right. He had the idea first. It's his undeserved gift to you, because he loves you. That's called grace.

And he won't force it on you. He's given you the choice.

Will you leave the barrier where it is, and be separated from God forever?

Or will you accept God's grace – his undeserved gift of a solution – and know God personally, intimately, forever?

It's one or the other. There's no third option.

That's the Reality.

So what now?

A. I want to know God personally

  1. Tell him that (that's called prayer)!
    • tell him you're sorry for ignoring him, and for all the sin that's resulted from it – and mean it!
    • give him his rightful position in your life, ie the one who's in charge, who you want to please.
    • trust him to sort you out. You can't do it yourself, but he can.
  2. Read the Bible
    • this is God's way of telling us about who he is, how we should relate to him, and how we should live our lives
    • it helps a lot to look at the Bible with another Christian. They can help you to understand it and you can encourage each other to respond to what it says.
  3. Spend time with Christians
    • tell them about the decision you've made – they'll be delighted!
    • you're part of a family now. God designed us to be together and to love him together.
    • they can help you understand the decision you've made, and they can support you and encourage you as you get to know God.

B. I'm not sure what I think about all this.

Please keep thinking about it and asking questions!

C. I don't want anything to do with God.

Please reconsider!
God's not going to force you to know him, but you're seriously, tragically missing out!
