What is a CU?
The Challenge:
30 000 students
1 God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all (Ephesians 4:6)
1 way to the Father through Jesus Christ (John 14:6)
People need to hear that message.
NUCU is for people who want to see today’s students following Jesus Christ.
- We aim to encourage students to be disciples of Jesus Christ in the student world, so that everyone sees how amazing God is.
- The Gospel as it is explained in the Bible tells us what our identity is (see our Doctrinal Basis).
- We are united in our conviction that the Gospel is true and that we are called to believe and rely on it, let it shape our lives, explain it to others and defend it, because ‘it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes (Romans 1:16).
- As a Christian Union we seek to fulfil our aim by telling our non-Christian friends the good news about who Jesus Christ is and what He’s done (Matthew 28:19); helping each other to know and understand what we need from the Bible (God’s message to us); to get to know and love Him better and have an even greater desire to tell our friends about Jesus (Colossians 1:10; Ephesians 4;11-16).
- We hope that as we do in Nottingham what God wants us to: tell others about Jesus and help each other to know and love Him better (always asking God to enable us to do this), everyone would see how amazing God is!
The CU is inter-denominational, which basically means it doesn't represent any one denomination (eg. Church of England, or Baptist for example). The CU purely focuses on issues of first importance, the truth about who Jesus is and what He’s done for us. This is outlined in the Doctrinal Basis.
It might also be helpful to think what the CU is not! The CU is not:
- A church (so therefore doesn't do stuff like baptism or communion / breaking of bread / Lord's supper etc.)
- A purely social gathering (the CU exists to make Jesus Christ known to those who have met Him personally as their King, and to help build people up in their relationships with God and in their personal evangelism.)
- A Christian dating agency!
- A really big quiche (apparently)
Hopefully this has clarified a few issues for you. If you have any more questions relating to the role of the CU, please do contact us for more information.
